China Installs New Leader for Casino Enclave Macau

NO Deposit bonus $43

Macau's casino gambling economy and government will have a new leader, nominally elected but effectively installed by the Chinese government.

OnlineVegas.com! Fernando Chui will be the new leader of the Chinese possession Macau, although the election has yet to be held. The casino gambling region and former Portugese colony has Chui as the only candidate, an orderly election the way Beijing likes them.

Gaming industry insiders are wondering whether Chui's advancement to the top of the colony will result in changes in the mainland policies on the gambling zone, especially in regard to visa restrictions. A limitation on frequency and length of stay by the Chinese government on visas for its population is a main cause for the slowed economy in Macau.

But others are saying Chui will have no choice but to continue existing regulations.

"Everyone accepts gambling policy in the near future is designed to slow the industry because it grew too fast," says Larry So, a political analyst at Macau Polytechnic Institute.

Chui has promised to diversify Macau's economy, so that it is not so dominated by and dependent on gambling and casino revenue. He has sworn to "make great efforts to promote the sustainable growth of gaming-related industries."

Chui has already received 286 of 300 votes from the election commission, leaving a poll today as a formality. Chui will assume office December 20th, the ten year anniversary of the colony reversion to Chinese rule.

This or That with Jonathan Duhamel

NO Deposit bonus $43

The 2013 World Series of Poker is rapidly winding down, but there are still a few events remaining for Team PokerStars Pros to make their mark. Chad Brown and Nacho Barbero are two players who've talked about their Vegas experiences with the PokerStars Blog, and now Jonathan Duhamel, the 2010 WSOP Main Event champ and a member of Team PokerStars Canada, has decided to share as well.

The 2013 WSOP is becoming known as the "Year of the Canadians" as ten bracelets have been awarded to citizens of that country. Duhamel, who has cashed three times at the 2013 WSOP for $36,595 (including a tenth-place finish in Event #25 $5,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better), is hoping to become the 11th Canadian to capture a bracelet, which would be his second piece of gold.

In this edition of This or That, which takes a look at both the serious and unserious sides of various Team PokerStars Pros, we caught up with Duhamel, who was playing the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship, to talk about life in Vegas, Canada's recent success and much more.

PokerStars Blog: How is the 2013 WSOP going for you thus far?

Jonathan Duhamel: Well, good and bad. Could be worse, could be better. I have a few cashes, but I don't have any final tables yet. My best score is a tenth place, so I'm looking forward to trying to do better than that.

PSBlog: You're currently the chip leader in the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship.* How does that feel?

JD: It feels amazing, but it's just the start. It's the start of Day 2, so hopefully I'm still going to be the chip leader at the end of the day. It's a fun tournament. All the superstars are here. Definitely feel good so far.

*Duhamel finished Day 2 second in chips behind David Benyamine with 78 players remaining.

PSBlog: What are some things, other than poker, that you like to do while in Las Vegas?

JD: Well, obviously I like to party like all the other kids in Vegas. I just want to chill. I like to play golf, go-karting, stuff like that. Just anything that's going to keep your head off poker for a while.

PSBlog: You went to the Electric Daisy Carnival for the first time this year with fellow Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree. How was that experience?

JD: It was pretty amazing. It was my first time going over there. I'd heard so many good things about it, so definitely it was a lot of fun. I only went on a Friday night and we had a blast, we had a lot of fun.

PSBlog: Canadians are doing very well at the WSOP this summer. As a Canadian yourself, how do you feel about that?

JD: It feels pretty good. I mean it's fun to see that. It's not that much of a surprise because there are a lot of amazing poker players in Canada, so it's really good to see them doing well and for sure it's going to continue I think.

PSBlog: Do you hang out with any other Team Pros when you're in Vegas?

JD: We try to but we all play all the time so it's kind of tough. We had some go-karting last week that was organized, so for those of us that were available we went. Besides that we have drinks here and there when we have time, but usually we're so busy playing all the time that it's tough.

PSBlog: What's your favorite club in Vegas?

JD: That's a good one. Probably XS [at the Wynn] even though Hakkasan [at MGM] is pretty sick. I think XS it number one.

PSBlog: What are your plans for after the series?

JD: Just going home to relax. It's a big, big grind of six weeks in Vegas. I'm just looking forward to relaxing. It's kind of my vacation going home for a month, five weeks maybe. Just going to play some golf, see my buddies and family and just relax.

PSBlog: Will we see you at the EPT Barcelona?

JD: Absolutely.

UK Commercial Station Partners in Online Casino with Partygaming

NO Deposit bonus $43

Partygaming and England's Channel Five will develop an online casino and bingo gambling site together, using Five's brands and promoting the site on the television station.

The United Kingdom's Channel Five, a commercially operated television station, will work with online gambling operator Partygaming to develop Internet casino and bingo opportunities. The new online casino will carry the Five brand and logo, and will receive significant promotion on the television station.

"Five is looking aggressively at how to expand its presence in digital media," said the chairman and CEO of the broadcast company, Dawn Airey. "We look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with PartyGaming, whose job it will be to create for Five's audience the very best gaming experience."

Partygaming had just seen its deal with ITV end, allowing it to enter into an exclusive relationship with Five.

Channel Five had just been given permission by regulators to offer interactive gaming on its late-night programming, including the televising and gambling on roulette and other casino games.

The agreement marks Partygaming's fourth partnership arrangement to cross-develop established brands with gambling products. Company executives say they expect more as the business enjoys the removal of the gray cloud of potential US prosecution, after paying a hefty fee to US prosecutors.

Las Vegas Sands Casinos Prosper in Macau While Las Vegas Suffers

NO Deposit bonus $43

The Las Vegas Sands casino empire is shifting its revenue base to Macau as the gambling region dominated Las Vegas income by about four to one.

Play Now at Slots Oasis! While Las Vegas slowly tries to begin recovery from the recession, Macau has already started to soar again. The growth of gambling revenues in the Chinese gaming province offset poor number in Las Vegas for Las Vegas Sands, allowing the company to equal analyst predictions on fourth-quarter earnings.

Profits adjusted for one-time items came to three cents a share, the amount most gaming experts had foreseen for the company. Macau was responsible for a whopping 80 percent of revenue in the quarter.

“Gaming volumes at Venetian Macau showed a healthy increase,” wrote Deutsche Bank analyst Karen Tang. The financial advisor noted that Sands should be the "biggest beneficiary of strong Chinese New Year visitor inflows into Macau," creating further promise for results in the current quarter.

Sands needed the good news from the Orient as it is particularly hard-hit in Las Vegas. The Venetian and its companion casino are designed to attract convention business and large groups, the most damaged aspect of Vegas tourism.

Las Vegas Sands stock rose dramatically on the news, but then quickly declined after the market as a whole dropped on the announcement by the Federal Reserve that it had raised the discount rate, a sign of credit tightening in the future.

Harrah's Signs With Dragonfish for Online Gambling Software

NO Deposit bonus $43

The online gambling software deal Harrah's signed with Dragonfish indicates a strategy at least by this land-based casino operator to purchase rather than develop Internet gaming systems.

Play Now at Golden Casino! Harrah's Entertainment took the next step on the road to expanding its brand into the online gambling market this week by signing Dragonfish as its supplier of Internet gaming software. Dragonfish, a subsidiary of 888, will provide the world's largest land-based casino operator with online poker and gambling software, as well as payment systems and technical support.

The deal is a blockbuster in the Internet gambling world, as speculation has been rampant about the nature of the industry as the US market prepares to open. By choosing to sign with Dragonfish rather than develop its own software internally, Harrah's may be signalling that the land-based operators may bring their brands to partner with existing software companies, rather than create their own.

"This seems a sensible approach, as Vegas companies have well-established brands that could only fail if the software was of inferior quality," says OCA gaming analyst Sherman Bradley. "It also bodes well for the existing online casino industry, because it means that the industry structure, which is imposed largely by the software providers, will likely remain the same."

Harrah's announced the first two brands to be featured under the new deal, the World Series of Poker and Caesar's Casino. A introduction date was not announced, although 888 CEO Gigi Levy said the company would use the next 18 months to realize its full potential.

Harrah's deal with Dragonfish does not presently involve exposure to US customers, and 888 has stayed clear of the US market . This may also work to Harrah's benefit when US regulators are deciding which online casinos to license.

PCA 2015: Vamooo! Victory for Brazil in 2015 Americas Cup of Poker

NO Deposit bonus $43

The much-used phrase "it's all over but the shouting" has never been more apt. From two days of intense team poker, Brazil has emerged from a group of six qualifiying countries as this year's Americas Cup of Poker champions. The poker is over, but the shouts of celebration are only just beginning.

Brazil wins!

We provided a rundown of how the Americas Cup of Poker works yesterday. Tonight let's talk about Brazil's path to victory.

Day 1

We spoke with Mexico's coach and Team PokerStars Pro Online member Jorge "Baalim" Limon yesterday about his team's status as the Americas Cup defending champs and their plans for the five six-handed sit-n-go matches making up yesterday's schedule.

Unfortunately for the Mexican squad, those plans weren't realized as they finished the day tied for last in points with Ecuador, with the latter earning the fifth seed thanks to tiebreakers.

Six countries per table on Day 1

Meanwhile Peru was the team accumulating the most points, winning two of the five matches outright and picking up a second and a third in two others. Even with those results, Peru only barely outperformed second-seeded Brazil, with Argentina (third) and Uruguay (fourth) filling out the brackets.

Here's how the points went on Day 1:

1. Peru -- 37 points
2. Brazil -- 36 points
3. Argentina -- 32 points
4. Uruguay -- 29 points
5. Ecuador -- 18 points
6. Mexico -- 18 points

The finishes determined not only which teams would play another on Day 2, but the higher-seeded teams would get to pick who played who in the heads-up matches as well.

Day 2

Best-of-five heads-up matches between the countries would determine things on the second day of play. While Ecuador and Mexico played each other to see who would finish fifth and sixth, the other four teams were still with hopes of becoming this year's Americas Cup of Poker champions.

Ecuador well handed Mexico, winning four of the five matches to take fifth and leave Mexico with a sixth-place finish. Meanwhile, the semifinal matches had top-seed Peru taking on fourth-seed Uruguay and second-seed Brazil play against third-seed Argentina.

Both of the semifinals were nailbiters, with Brazil beating Argentina 3-2 and Uruguay outlasting Peru 3-2 as well. After falling behind Argentina would then win the third-place match versus Peru while the final continued to play out.

Heads Up- ACP-PCA2015-LAPT-Monti-1944.jpg

Mano a mano on Day 2

In the final, Brazil -- coached by Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari -- stormed out to a 2-1 match lead over the Francisco "paulwiter" GarcĂa-coached Uruguayans.

Soon all were focused on the two remaining matches with Juliano Medeiros (Brazil) taking on Lisandro Agustin Clavijo Betancor (Uruguay) on the feature table while Lucas Penitente Sfalsin (Brazil) and Gustovo Schol Rios (Uruguay) battled on one of the outer tables. Brazil only needed to win one of the two to claim the title.

Brazil edged in front in both of the matches, and eventually on the outer table came a big all-in hand that saw an eight on the board, Uruguay's Rios holding T♥8♥ and Brazil's Sfalsin ahead with J♥8♣. The better hand held, and Rios was down to just five big blinds.

Soon Rios was all in again with K♦2♣ versus Sfalsin's pocket tens, and it looked like Brazil was about to clinch the title with a third win in the best-of-five. But a king flopped and Rios's hand held, and the title was still undecided.

Soon, though, another big all-in developed on the feature table between the Brazilian Medeiros and the Uruguayan Bentancor. When the hands were revealed, Medeiros called out to his teammates the cards -- A♥A♦ for himself, and A♣5♣ for his opponent.

The 4♠4♣3♠ flop heightened the suspense, giving Bentancor a wheel draw plus a backdoor flush possibility. But the 4♦ on the turn made a full house for Medeiros, and after the river 5♦ the Brazilians were celebrating with one last victory chant that will surely last well into the night.
