
Another action-packed week is within the books on the 2016 World Series of Poker, and as you’d expect the massive events have made a big impact at the standings within the 2016 Card Player Player of the Year race. Here's a look back on the events that almost all shaped the leaderboard this week.
WSOP $50,000 Poker Players Championship
The 2016 WSOP $50,000 Poker Players Championship drew 91 entries to construct a complete prize pool of $4,176,000. Finally Brian Rast emerged victorious, joining Michael Mizrachi (who finished fourth this year) as a two-time champion of this prestigious event. For the win Rast earned the $1,296,097 top prize, 918 POY points and his third WSOP gold bracelet.
Rast defeated Justin Bonomo heads-up for the title. This was Bonomo’s fourth final table of the WSOP, with all four finishes being for third place or higher. Bonomo started out the summer with a runner-up showing within the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. after which notched back-to-back thirds within the $10,000 no-limit hold’em six-max championship and the $10,000 seven card stud eight-or-better championship.
The $801,048 and 765 POY points he earned for this latest score were enough to catapult him into the outright lead within the Player of the Year race, with 4,470 points and $2,420,823 in year-to-date earnings. He has made seven total final tables this year, winning two titles along the best way in a $25,000 high roller at Aria and a 2,200 no-limit hold’em preliminary event on the EPT Grand Final.
Bellagio High Rollers
This week the Bellagio hosted two $25,000 buy-in high roller events on July 1 and a pair of. The primary tournament drew 63 total entries to construct a prize pool of $1,512,000. Jason Koon came out on top in that one, earning $514,080 and 504 POY points for the win.
Koon outlasted a tricky final table that included POY contenders Anthony Gregg (4th – $120,960) and Chance Kornuth (8th – $60,480). Gregg earned 252 POY points for his seventh final table finish of the year and climbed to fourth place at the POY leaderboard with 3,223 points. Kornuth added 84 points for what was also his seventh final table finish. He now sits in ninth place within the standings with 3,010 points.
The second high roller event drew 39 entries to construct a $936,000 prize pool. David Peters emerged victorious on this one, capturing the $393,120 first-place prie and 420 POY points. Peters was removed from done with winning this week though.
WSOP $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em
Fresh off his win at Bellagio David Peters came out on top in another huge event. Peters outlasted a field of 1,860 players to win his first gold bracelet within the WSOP $1,500 no-limit hold’em event this week.
For the win Peters was awarded $412,557 and 1,080 POY points. This was his 11th final table and second title of the year (and the week, for that matter.) Peters had cashed for greater than $3 million by the beginning of February, making three deep runs in six-figure buy-in super high roller events, including a runner-up showing within the $200,000 buy-n event on the WPT Philippines and another second-place finish within the $250,000 AUD high roller on the Aussie Millions.
With $4,703,092 in year-to-date earnings and 4,061 points earned Peters now sits in second place within the POY rankings, just 409 points behind current leader Justin Bonomo.
