What makes high-salaried players so great? Their collective ability to contribute in a number of areas.
Russell Westbrook can put up 40 points on any given night, but it’s the value he provides in rebounds and assists that make him such an attractive daily fantasy option. Andre Drummond’s 20 points per night are impressive, but it’s the 20 rebounds that transforms him from solid play to difference maker.
Identifying which elite players are most likely to fill the stat sheet in several areas is the single biggest factor in determining whether or not you’re a profitable DFS player. And we’re here to help.
Here are this week’s safest high-salary bets:
Tuesday - Kyle Lowry, Raptors (vs. Knicks)
Lowry has contributed in a handful of categories so far this season, averaging 18.3 points, 6.3 assists, five rebounds and 2.3 steals through the first seven games. He’s in a prime position to bolster those marks Tuesday night against the visiting New York Knicks. Lowry is mostly matchup proof, but should feast on a Knicks backcourt that has no measurable defensive threat. Fire up Lowry with confidence.
Wednesday - Andre Drummond, Pistons (at Kings)
Drummond would have been a runaway choice here had Sacramento star DeMarcus Cousins not returned after missing four games with an Achilles injury. As it stands, Drummond is still the best option of the night despite his rapidly growing price tag. Drummond leads the NBA in rebounding by an almost unimaginable margin, and should face little resistance against a hobbled Cousins and the lowly Kings.
Thursday - Stephen Curry, Warriors (at Timberwolves)
Entering the week, Curry is averaging 5.4 made 3-pointers per game. That’s more than three teams are averaging, including Minnesota, which has no way of keeping Curry from running roughshod. The Timberwolves are allowing 27 3-point attempts per game and, while they’re limiting opponents to 28.1 percent from long range, none of those foes featured Curry. He’s in for a big night.
Friday - Russell Westbrook, Thunder (vs. 76ers)
In a game the Thunder should win by at least 20 points, Westbrook is a polarizing choice. Many DFSers will point to the enormous spread and fade Westbrook based on expected playing time. That could prove costly, however, given how productive Westbrook can be in limited minutes. If the Thunder do blow out the 76ers it will be by Westbrook’s doing, making him a must-play even in this scenario.
Saturday - James Harden, Rockets (vs. Mavericks)
Harden has everything you want and need in a high-salary FanDuel player: he plays a ton of minutes (nearly 40 per game entering the week), he contributes in a multitude of categories (29.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists) and he gets to the free-throw line (12.7 attempts per game). He has a terrific matchup Saturday night against the visiting Mavericks, who will struggle mightily to contain him.
Sunday - Carmelo Anthony, Knicks (vs. Pelicans)
There are times when you’ll want to fade Anthony, but Sunday certainly isn’t one of them. Melo has a sensational matchup against a Pelicans team surrendering a league-worst 114.7 points per game heading into the week. Unless New Orleans gets creative and blankets Anthony with Anthony Davis, Melo should have a field day at Madison Square Garden, making him a solid high-priced choice.
