LAPT8 Chile: Quezada crushed in seventh, Teixeira taking from table

Renata Teixeira's last name is pronounced tay-SHARE-ah. Far from sharing, though, she's taking and taking so far at today's LAPT Chile Main Event final table, and in fact has catapulted all of the way up to second position after starting the day as the table's short stack.

LAPTViña-2015-5289.jpg

Renata Teixeira

We might well be reporting on her elimination, however, if not for a fortuitous river card just now in a hand versus Rodrigo Quezada, who has become our seventh-place finisher.

The hand began with a Teixeira raise to 88,000 from under the gun. The table folded around to Quezada in the big blind who called, and the pair together watched a flop of all clubs -- 6♣A♣4♣.

Quezada checked, then called Teixeira's continuation bet of 100,000. The A♥ fell on fourth street pairing the board, and this time when Quezada checked, Teixeira announced she was pushing all in, and Quezada -- whose stack only barely exceeded hers -- didn't wait long before calling.

Teixeira turned over A♠K♥ for trip aces, but Quezada had flopped a flush with T♣9♣. All leaned forward as the dealer burned a card and delivered the river -- the 6♥!

Another pair on board meant a full house for the purple-haired player from Brazil. Suddenly she was up close to 1.4 million and second in chips, while Quezada was down to just 75,000.

The next hand saw Teixeira check-raising the turn versus Fabian Chauyire to earn another pot and chip up still further.

A couple of hands later Quezada was all in for his last 35,000 from the hijack versus two opponents, Javier Venegas (small blind) and Nacho Barbero (big blind). The board came 8♣6♣A♣T♥3♥ with a river bet from Venegas chasing Barbero, and after Venegas showed A♦Q♠ Quezada mucked, his tourney run ending in seventh ($29,480).

Here are the current counts as they approach the end of Level 26, with start-of-day leader Chauriye now sixth of six:

Oscar Alache (Chile) -- 2,410,000
Renata Teixeira (Brazil) -- 1,836,000
Nacho Barbero (Argentina) -- 1,161,000
Javier Venegas (Argentina) -- 1,123,000
Justo Esquivel (Chile) -- 834,000
Fabian Chauriye (Chile) -- 595,000

PCA 2013: Russia lifts World Cup of Poker trophy ahead of defeated Tajiks

In the best of clichéd senses there was everything to play for when the World Cup of Poker entered its last, critical stage.

Made up of a round of nation vs. nation sit & gos, determined by their standings after the penultimate round, the final stages pitched everyone together in a last ditch scramble for points, and the coveted World Cup.

captains_pca10_wcpw.jpg
Captains at work

As is usually the case in a World Cup, it was Germany taking it to the wire. In the final heads-up bout against Canada the scores were tied at two games each. The fifth match would decide it, sort of, with Germany able to wrap it all up and lift the trophy for a second time if they could just beat Canada, and rely on Tajikistan not sweeping the Belgians.

jan_heitmann_pca10_wcpw.jpg
Team Germany was led by their captain Jan Heitmann

But Germany stumbled at the last, leaving Russia ahead on 222 points and Tajikistan needing a win from any of their last two games.

It was a big ask for the Tajik's, who were favourites among those watching by simple virtue of being from a country few people could place on a map. One of their team, Shamshold Niyatbekov had already earned himself Most Valuable Player status and a check for $2,500. But not even Shamshold could win them all.

Shamshod-Niyatbekov_pca10_wcpw.jpg
Most Valuable Player: Shamshold Niyatbekov

It would come down to their last match against Belgium, the last match of the World Cup of Poker IX. A win would seal it. Defeat would gift it to the Russians.

The look on successive Tajik faces told the story better than the cards could. One by one they lost to the Belgians, urged on by their lubricated captain Christophe de Meulder, and to the sheer delight of the Russian team who broke into broad grins and laughter, stark contrast to when asked to smile for their team shot yesterday: "We're Russian, we don't smile."

champions_russia_pca10_wcpw.jpg
Champions: Team Russia

But they're smiling now, winners of a combined $90,000, worth $22,500 to each player.

The full results are as follows:

1st. Russia, 222 points
2nd. Germany, 218 points
3rd. Tajikistan, 217 points
4th. Belgium, 215 points
5th. Bulgaria, 215 points (officially a tie, the money was chopped and position determined by one hand of no fold'em hold'em)
6th. Canada, 201 points
7th. Japan, 195 points
8th. Brazil, 178 points

The day's play was peppered with tell-tale signs of good natured rivalry. Team spirit, merely 24 hours old, had become weeklong lifelong friendship. Team chants filled the air. The Germans paid homage to the movie Snatch by calling themselves "Zee Germans!" While Canada routinely cried "Who are you afraid of? Canada!" but with a zeal that could only be taken for irony.

Adrienne-Rowsome__pca10_wcpw.jpg
Canada's captain: Adrienne Rowsome

By midnight good spirits had turned to simply spirits. Team Canada were announced as safely in the club house, ("And drinking!" added Captain Adrienne Rowsom), while Japan roared their way through their last matches. Nobuyuki Tanaka was doing most of the roaring. Yesterday he lost all of his matches (and was presented with a limited edition set of playing cards in tribute). Today, he seemed to win them all.

Nobuyuki_Tanaka_pca10_wcpw.jpg

But the lasting image of the World Cup of Poker 2013 will be that of a couple of dozen people who until yesterday had not met each other, laughing their way through poker that didn't need to sparkle to entertain.

bulgarians_pca10_wcpw.jpg
Defeated Bulgarians

It may seem like a trivial event and a difficult one to follow. In fact, when in full swing the worst thing you can ask is "what's going on?" It's simply impossible to say. But when the dust settles it's worth remembering that the money involved is hardly trivial, not to players who will return to micro-stakes games with one hell of a story to tell. To put it in perspective the Tajiks fly home to Dushabe with five times the average salary of Tajikistan in their pockets.

tajiks_pca10_wcpw.jpg
The devastated Tajik team

It brings to an end another World Cup of Poker. Once again it didn't fail, make that couldn't fail, to entertain, inspire and infuriate in equal measure. It was played in a spirit sometimes lost in major tournaments. Just like previous years, defeated teams chose to hang around and see how things turned out rather than get an early night.

russia_celebrates_pca10_wcpw.jpg
Team Russia celebrates

That spirit will live on. Next year the World Cup of Poker will return. The rules will still require a master's degree to understand, the players will still arrive via routes impossible to fathom. And despite promises to the contrary it will still finish at a God awful hour in the middle of the night. And it will be glorious.

Good night from Atlantis.

2013 SCOOP Tournament Leader Board correction

^

During SCOOP 2013, there were four separate tournament leader boards: Low, Medium, High and Overall. An error was identified in the initial calculation of points awarded from High stakes tournaments with small fields, which affected the results of the High and Overall leader boards.

The advertised rules required that leader board points should only have been awarded when a player cashed. However, that rule failed to be enforced during the initial calculation of leader board points, and thus some players who played in certain high buy-in events were mistakenly credited with points they were not eligible to receive. PokerStars regrets the error and has taken steps to solve this instance, and to prevent it reoccurring.

As a result of this error, 'GeorgeDanzer' received extra points, and was mistakenly ranked in first place on the Overall TLB. After correcting the calculations, the actual winner of the Overall TLB is 'AceQuad' of Mexico. PokerStars has now corrected the leader board and contacted the two affected players: 'GeorgeDanzer' and 'AceQuad'. The Overall leader board prizes of the SCOOP Trophy and the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT10 Grand Final Package will be awarded to 'AceQuad'.

In addition, this error caused a re-ranking of some players who would have received prizes on the 2013 SCOOP High leader board. Specifically the following players have moved down from top 10 positions to non-prize awarded positions: 'blanconegro', 'ninototoroko', and 'ImDaNuts'. The following players have moved up into top 10 positions for the SCOOP High leader board and will now receive $1,050 WCOOP tickets for their efforts: 'ana marquez', 'AceQuad', and 'el_batong'.

Overall, ten events were affected by this calculation error. There were 51 players who were awarded points they did not earn according to the official posted rules. The leader board has been re-calculated with the corrected formula. The correction has only changed the prizes for the eight players listed above.

The ten affected events were the High versions of SCOOP 4, 6, 11, 12, 16, 27, 28, 30, 37, and 38. Because these events attract smaller fields, players were awarded points for highly ranked finishes, despite not cashing in the events. PokerStars has corrected the points calculation process to avoid this error repeating in the future. We apologise to the affected players for this error.

Players with any queries about this can email scoop@pokerstars.com

Greeks in charge as Belgian Poker Series enters Day 2

ps_news_thn.jpgEarlier in 2011, a few Greek men decided to challenge each other to a year-long contest to determine who was the king of the Greeks. The Greece Poker Challenge pitted Stavros 'IDOLLS' Kalfas, George 'gkap13' Kapalas and Alexis 'J0hnny_Dr@m@' Zervos against each other. Now it appears the Belgian Poker Series could end up determining who wins the entire thing.

At first the contest involved a bunch of different categories.

  • EPT Finish
  • Live Cashes
  • Online ROI
  • SCOOP
  • WCOOP
  • Unless one of the men has a big finish in this weekend's 10th Anniversay celebrations, it could well be that the on-going Belgian Poker Series event determines who comes out on top.

In the live cashes category, Zervos recently moved into the lead after a cash for €25,800 in an EPT Prague side event. He's tied with Kalfas with four cashes, but Zervos has earned more money and hence has the points lead.

    greek_challenge.JPG

George 'gkap13' Kapalas doing just fine at the Grand Final

As the live event category is highly likely to decide the winner of the Challenge, what's going on at the BPS Grand Final is of ever-growing importance. Day 2a is going on right now.

Newest Idea for Atlantic City Casinos is Government Advertising

Atlantic City casino operators are telling the state revenues could be improved if the government would just advertise for them.

Atlantic City casino operators keep coming up with ideas to jumpstart their plummeting revenue streams while deflecting blame for the current situation to everyone but themselves. The latest from the eleven licensed New Jersey gambl, ing venues is the concept that increased advertising may solve the problems, as long as the government pays for it.

The Casino Association of New Jersey says it would take $20 million a year to properly promote the town and its gaming. But the casinos currently only have a budget of $11 million, and they want the state to fund the rest.

The group says government contributions would be an investment that would repay itself, through increased gambling revenue and contributions to state projects. It  says Las Vegas spends $250 million to promote itself a year.

"Our job is to change perceptions of Atlantic City and bring more people here," said Jeff Vasser, president of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority. "We are in the most expensive media market in the nation."

Previously, casino executives have speculated that paying for property to be developed as casinos was holding the industry back, and asked for city use of eminent domain rights to aid their private enterprise. A lack of transportation has also been accused of causing casino attrition, and a call for an improved airport and new rail facilities, to be paid for by government, was raised.

Jeff Corbo, head of the Casino Association, says millions of people who live nearby are uninformed of all that exists in Atlantic City that doesn't involve casino gambling. He thinks those features, considered so insignificant recently as to be ignored in casino promotions even down to low-cost ads like on casino websites, now may turn Atlantic City's fortune around... as long as someone else is footing the bill.
