We've seen some incredible poker feats in recent times involving players winning multiple major tournaments.
First there was Ant Zinno winning back-to-back World Poker Tour titles which was an amazing feat. Then just last week we witnessed Yuguang Li from China win two major titles in two days at the 22nd edition of the Macau Poker Cup.
If winning tournament is so easy then how come we have never seen anyone win two ANZPT titles?
That's right, over seven seasons of the ANZPT the same person has never held the trophy aloft more than once.
But the truth is that winning a poker tournament is actually not easy. It's damn hard, so the lack of a two-time champ is no real surprise.
It did take the European Poker Tour ten seasons before Vicky Coren became the first two-time EPT champion, and the EPT hold far more events each year than we see in Australia.
But perhaps that situation will change here in Sydney where we have two extremely talented former ANZPT champions both going great guns late on Day 2 of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event.
Octavian Voegele was the 2011 ANZPT Adelaide champion back in Season 3 and his quest for title number two is right on track after coming into today with the second largest stack in the room. Most of those chips were courtesy of a remarkable hand we reported on Day 1a when Voegele flopped quads and his roommate Tommy Vo flopped a full house.
The other chance for the two-time club is Michael Kanaan. Again it was 2011 and Season 3 of the tour when Kanaan rose to fame when he won this very event in his home town of Sydney. Since then, Kanaan has come very close to winning a second title on a couple of occasions with multiple final tables on the APPT and ANZPT, including a fifth place result at the Season 5 ANZPT Repechage Event in Melbourne.
Kanaan is currently one of the chip leaders with over 300,000 in chips approaching the money bubble. Knowing how aggressive he can be, and with plenty of chips in hand, we can expect Kanaan to flex his muscle over the next few levels to try and accumulate as many chips as he can before the end of the day.
If Kanaan or Voegele can go all the way, it would be a great accomplishment to become the first two-time ANZPT champion. Perhaps it's time for history to be written.
And with all of these multiple tournament champions, then maybe it suggests that poker is a skill game after all?
