One of the most important illegal gambling busts happened recently involving dozens of defendants who're accused of running an illegal gambling operation in association with the Russian mob. Inspite of the indictment sitting over their head, one of the defendants want the correct to continue to gamble.
Abe Mosseri, a certified poker player, petitioned the court to permit him to travel to Las Vegas to continue to make a living playing poker while he awaits trial. Mosseri became the most recent in a string of players indicted within the case which were granted that permission by the courts.
The contention is that Mosseri and the opposite players make their living playing poker, and therefore need to be allowed to work similar to some other defendant would as they await trial. Prosecutors haven't attempted to prevent the players from working, despite the character in their charges.
"This isn't Mr. Mosseri's want to get some hot weather in Vegas," said Michael Bachner, defense attorney for Masseri. "he just desires to engage in his livelihood, that's a legal activity he has done for many, many years."
The players are accused of varied crimes involving the illegal gambling case, most notably money laundering. When Masseri was arrested, authorities found millions of greenbacks in a secure within the Bellagio Hotel, where Masseri regularly played poker.
The judge within the case ruled that Masseri could travel to Las Vegas for tournaments, but couldn't stay on the Bellagio.
The case centers on a bookmaking operation that investigators believe was a multi-million dollar operation. Several defendants have already pleaded guilty within the case, but Masseri's case remains to be pending.
