If you're going to start a festival with something you may as well go with something big, and you don't get much bigger than a $100,000 Super High Roller event at Atlantis on Paradise Island. It's the now customary start to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.
Not that you would have thought that at 12.05pm this afternoon. When things got underway there were only seven players, split between two tables. It was quiet and low key, not the stuff poker dreams are made of.
But eight levels later some 43 players had registered, there were six re-entries, and 35 were bagging up chips, led tonight by Talal Shakerchi.
It proved an interesting day for business leaders turned poker players in action today - three in particular - Shakerchi, Kathy Lehne and Bill Perkins.
Shakerchi bagged up 805,000 at the close, good for the lead and narrowly ahead of Nick Petrangelo with 800,000. Meanwhile a newcomer was making headlines. Kathy Lehne faced down some tough opposition, even sending Isaac Haxton to the rail. She showed considerable class in what was her Super High Roller debut, bagging up 783,000.

But as the adage goes, nobody wins anything on Day 1 of an event, a fact made clear to Perkins today in triplicate.
One of poker's bon viveurs, Perkins fired three times today, missing on each occasion. Talk is he will be back for a fourth go tomorrow. If he turns things around it could prove the stuff of legends.
Others who were out and then in again included Erik Seidel and Haxton, who played today with a Steve O'Dwyer figurine (apparently made by his sister). Others hit the rail not to return, for now at least. They included the likes of Isaac Baron, JC Alvarado, Antonio Esfandiari (watched from the rail by Mr Esfandiari Snr today), Thomas Muehloecker and Ole Schemion (note: Oh-luh, not Oh-lay!).
They have until play starts tomorrow to re-enter. Alternatively they can scan the schedule for any of the 13 new events which start tomorrow, most notably the $2,200 LAPT main event, which features unlimited re-entries.
