It's been an incredible two weeks for Fedor Holz. He got a lovely Christmas present when he won the WPT $100,000 Alpha8 in Las Vegas on December 19 and then began 2016 in style when he took down the $200,000 WPT Super High Roller event in the Philippines on January 4. His double was good for more than $5,000,000.
"It just really indescribable, it's not something you even think about," Holz says during a break in play in the PCA $100,000 Super High Roller. "You think about maybe winning one tournament but even after that I was like 'That's enough'. I was just happy to end the year on a high note."
The first of Holz's wins was like a dream. He had a large chip lead going to the final table and basically steamrolled his way to victory. "The variance is so huge, the different outcomes in tournaments," he says. "From being short stacked to having a huge chip lead. In that one everything went my way."
His second victory was more unexpected. With five players left Holz was all-in with king-queen against Phil Ivey's pocket queens and spiked a king to survive. "I remember playing the $200K Manila and I was all-in and I was like fifth place, it's fine, it can end," he says. "But it's just unreal."
It's sweet relief for Holz who has had a number of near misses in the live arena since he first came to prominence when he won the WCOOP Main Event in September 2014.
In 2015 on the EPT he finished ninth in the EPT11 Malta Main Event and followed that up with a seventh and a fourth in the EPT11 Grand Final €100,000 and €50,000 Super High Rollers. A third and a sixth in big buy-in WSOP events followed and those near misses affected Holz.
"I think I'm someone who's really dedicated to always thinking that I'm going to win a tournament," Holz says. "I got so close so often. But after not closing like 10 tournaments you start to doubt yourself a little. So it was such a big relief to finally win something. Obviously I ran way above EV in the year, if the year had ended before the Alpha8 win it was still a great year, but with that win it was incredible."
After the victory in Asia his 2016 isn't looking to shabby either and the huge score has had some positive effects on how Holz will approach poker this year.
"It changes my plans a little," Holz says. "I've already met my financial goal for the year so that pressure or drive is gone. So I probably won't grind Vegas for six weeks, maybe just do two or three. Perhaps this year will be a little less hardcore and a more fun year. Right now everything feels like a freeroll, it's incredible."
One of the side effects of Holz's Super High Roller double is that he can feel the confidence coursing through his veins when he sits at the poker table. "It's ridiculous, I'm waiting for it to end. Like, ok I'm going to lose this flip its fine. But it doesn't stop, it's too sick."
As we've seen already today, Holz's run shows no sign of stopping yet.
