Wynn's $1.7 Billion Massachusetts Casino To Have Hearing In June

Wynn Resorts and the city of Somerville are set to have another hearing on June 2 to possibly clear the last hurdle remaining for the planned $1.7 billion casino in the nearby city of Everett, which sits just outside Boston.

According to a report from State House News Service, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection will consider Somerville’s challenge to Wynn’s permit for the casino, which will be built on a former Monsanto chemical site along the Mystic River.

The two feuding parties met Thursday, prompting the state to schedule another hearing for this summer. Somerville is planning to call a long list of witnesses.

“The city’s contention is due diligence on this project has yet to occur,” Frank Wright, city solicitor, said in a statement after Thursday’s hearing.

Wynn Resorts has put construction and the pollution clean-up process on hold while the legal battle with Somerville plays out. Earlier this year, the city of Boston, which had previously been trying to block the Wynn casino, agreed to support the project.

The state authorized a few casinos under a 2011 law, but only a slots parlor from Penn National Gaming has opened so far. A casino from MGM Resorts International in Springfield has also experienced delays.
