I enjoy both online poker and daily fantasy sports. Nor is perfect – there are certainly issues with each that I NEED fixed (hey sites: call me, my consulting rates are competitive) – but both pastimes are numerous fun and will be legalized and controlled around the U.s.a.. And so they both constitute gambling. Thus, it vexes me that DFS, despite being the less mature industry, was gaining acceptance from lawmakers at an astronomically faster rate than online poker. Working example: over the weekend, the brand new York legislature passed a bill that legalizes and regulates DFS, while together the state Assembly didn’t even vote on an internet poker bill.

On Saturday, the brand new York Assembly passed A10736, the DFS legalization bill, by a 91 to 22 vote, sending it over to the Senate. Senators discussed their twin bill, S8153, the remainder of the day and night, finally passing it by a forty five to 17 vote at two o’clock within the morning. The measure now rests within the hands of Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has ten days from Saturday morning to sign or veto the bill. He's expected to sign it, but although he is taking a special route, it's going to probably still become law. If he does nothing, it automatically becomes law, and if he vetoes it, both chambers of the legislature can overrule that veto with a two-thirds vote. And because they already voted on it by a large enough margin, the bill need to be veto-proof.

This is excellent news for brand new York daily fantasy fans and particularly for the 2 largest DFS sites, DraftKings and FanDuel. The 2 sites was in a legal struggle with The big apple and Attorney General Eric Scheiderman, eventually agreeing to withdraw from the brand new York market. Now that it seems like DFS might be legal within the Empire State, the sites are expected to leap back into the combo. Without the legislation, they'd have needed to fight it out in court.

As for poker, it was another loss. S5302, which might legalize and regulate online poker in New York, had already passed the Senate easily, 53 to five. Rep. Gary Pretlow’s twin bill, though, stalled out within the Assembly, not even getting a courtesy vote. Pretlow was also the sponsor of the DFS bill, identical to Sen. John Bonacic was the sponsor of both the DFS and online poker bills within the Senate.
